Sicilian Handicraft

The deepest popular spirit is found in the objects of Sicilian handicraft; fancy, taste, with inspiration coming from centuries of culture dedicated to working the land and everyday jobs have created real masterpieces.
Small objects are easily found in big Sicilian resorts and in the less known interior and costal villages. They are the purest expression of an original artistic form. The patient work of women has created refined and elegant works in embroidery, lace (tombolo) and the Sicilian "sfilato". The characteristic carpets woven on ancient looms made with cloth coloured bands are produced in the Madonie and Etna villages.

Wrought iron is found in the wheels of Sicilian carts, in railing, in bedsteads and with its elegance refines everyday objects such as lamps, flower pots, garden chairs and tables. Cart-edges painted with different colours are really wonderful. Different types of "canna", "rafia" baskets woven by peasants and fishermen, are easily found everywhere.

Pupi Siciliani

The puppets dressed in bright silk, the well-known Sicilian "pupi" are wrought in metal.
Sicilian handicraft offers many other objects: pottery made in Caltagirone, Santo Stefano di Camastra, Sciacca and other villages. Such pottery originates from ancient civilization, and adorns, not only the facades of Churches and palaces, but also offers suggestions in creating kitchen and table utensils, Christmas Crib shepherds, "giare" and "quartare" - which are like rough-surfaced but beautiful jars.

Wooden sculptures which reproduce masks and saints from the Greek domination, lava-stone handicraft coming from ancient eruptions and coral inlaid work which is practised again today in certain parts of the island.
